McCown coaches in high school while playing backup QB in NFL

When Josh McCown retired from the New York Jets and pro football at the end of last season, he did not leave the sport entirely.  He went home to Charlotte, North Carolina, and accepted a job coaching quarterbacks and receivers at Myers Park High School, where two of his sons play football.  “Where they are, at their ages, you can’t get this time back,” McCown said.  So when the Philadelphia Eagles recently tried to lure the 40-year-old quarterback out of retirement, they acceded to his request for family leave on Friday.  Charlotte is 500 miles from Philadelphia, close enough for McCown to be with his sons to help coach them under Friday night lights. He flies back to the Eagles after the game or early Saturday morning.  The Eagles sought McCown because their starting QB, Carson Wentz, has missed much of the past two seasons, and his backup, Nate Sudfield, broke his wrist in the first preseason game.  McCown said he signed with the Eagles because “they understand the family dynamic.”

Dear Josh:  We’ll see how understanding Eagle Fan is when Wentz fractures something while running for a first down, and you take off for Charlotte.  Having your cake and eating it too?
